How to Fix Common Issues with V-ray Proxy in SketchUp

There are many reasons why proxies in your scene may break, lose materials, or even disappear entirely. In this article, Globe Plants will guide you through troubleshooting common problems with Vray proxy in SketchUp.

Ensuring Proper Repathing of Textures

To start, ensure that all assets you import have their textures repathed through Vray > File Path Editor. You can also check out our video tutorial  Three Ways to Import Models into SketchUp for additional tips.

When everything is correctly repathed, your Vray File Path Editor will look something like this:

A V-Ray File Path Editor window is open on the right side of the screen, displaying a list of bitmap files, which include plant textures such as 'Acacia adunca' and 'Banksia marginata'. The scene appears to be part of an outdoor landscape design with concrete steps and a wooden fence in the background.

The scene features a modern house with wood-clad steps leading to the entrance, surrounded by a landscaped garden filled with flowering plants and trees. The V-Ray Frame Buffer is actively rendering the scene, showing details of the house, garden, and trees. On the right side, the V-Ray File Path Editor window lists bitmap textures, such as 'Acacia adunca' and 'Grevillea dielsiana'. The overall design captures a natural, desert-like environment with soft plant textures.

Common Causes of Broken or Missing Vray Proxies

1. Moving or Deleting Asset Folders

One common issue occurs when you move or change the location of your asset folders (Vrmesh folder), or if you delete some or all textures and Vrmesh files. To fix this:

  • Make sure not to move your assets' locations. Keep all assets on a single drive and avoid relocating them.

  • If you've already moved them, re-path your files using Vray > File Path Editor.

2. Using File Cleanup Plugins

Using file cleanup plugins like CleanUp can sometimes delete proxy file paths. If this happens, you'll likely need to manually reload your files.

3. Using Full Geometry and Proxy Files Together

Using both full geometry and proxy files for the same model (species) in one file can confuse Vray, leading to missing materials in the render. To prevent this, only use one version of the model—either the full geometry or the proxy.

Maintaining a clean scene is important not just for Vray, but for your overall workflow. A clean file is lighter and allows for faster interactions. Use the CleanUp plugin to tidy up your scene (before adding proxies), disable shadows while working, and choose simpler styles to speed up SketchUp.

By following these practices, you can prevent common issues with Vray proxies and enjoy a smoother workflow in SketchUp.

The scene includes wooden steps leading up to a building with large glass windows and a wooden fence in the background. A 'CleanUp' dialog box is open on the left side, displaying options for purging unused items, repairing edges, and merging materials. Another window, 'Validity Check,' shows the results of the cleanup, indicating 1562 edges reduced and no components or layers purged. The interface also displays various styles and material options on the right.
